Silence is loud
Every dong and screen wake is translated into money for the tech giants.
Every morning we wake up and pick up the phone, it’s flooded with notifications. From Social Media Apps to Productivity Apps, notifications are a key part of it. As of Social Media apps it’s the amount of time you spend on the platform that turns into money. So the ‘dong’ sound is their bait to lure you into their trap.
Every dong and screen wake is translated into money for the tech giants. But the funny part is only you can control how distracted you get. It’s always a choice. You could turn off your notifications and live in a distraction free world. Or another one is to quit the usage of Social Media. But that’s not a solution a lot of people would want.
Although, there is a simple solution which many know but don’t use. To just turn off the notification sound on your mobile. How would you feel if you heard someone constantly badgering you while trying to concentrate on something? The notifications are doing that exact same thing. Constant distraction but a mirage of it being less annoying because it’s your favorite sound.
But the effect it has on our brain is similar. Cal Newport talks about this in his book Deep Work. He very clearly shows how to concentrate in a constantly distracting world. I followed this myself and found great improvements in the way I worked.
I leave my phone on silent and focus on the task at hand with usually no music. If you find music makes you productive, then go for it.
My request to you would be to try living in a distraction free work environment. The notification button is like Thors Hammer, only the worthy can switch it off. Are you?
