Techno Social Cultural Convergence
Even I had the same look on my face when I heard it first xD
I heard this first when I was listening to Cal Newport talking to Ali Abdaal on his podcast. It's a term that sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it's actually a very real thing. Essentially, it refers to the ways in which technology, social interactions, and cultural values all come together to shape our daily lives. And let me tell you, it can get pretty weird.
Take, for example, the phenomenon of "Instagrammable food”. Nowadays, it's not enough for a meal to be delicious - it also has to look good on camera. Chefs are spending more time on presentation than ever before, and people are spending more time taking photos than actually eating the amazing looking food. It's like we're all living in some bizarre alternate reality where the primary goal of a meal is to get the most likes on social media.
Or how about the fact that we can now communicate with people all over the world in an instant, yet we still struggle to have meaningful conversations with the person sitting next to us on the bus? It's like technology has made us more connected than ever, but also more disconnected from each other.
And then there's the cultural impact of all this. We're living in a world where memes are a legitimate form of communication, where TikTok dances are more popular than actual dance styles, and where we measure our self-worth in likes and followers. It's a strange new world, my friends.
But hey, at least we can all laugh about it together. And even if we fail with AI, there's always the comforting knowledge that we can always unplug and go back to living like it's 1995.
